On June 6 and 7, 2017, I had the pleasure of attending and participating in the Gartner Business Intelligence, Analytics and Information Management Summit in Powai, Mumbai, India. The 2017 Summit was larger and even more productive than the Summit of 2016, with more than 650 delegates in attendance. The theme for 2017 was Information & Analytics Leadership: Empowering People with Trusted Data.
I vote for Data Democracy. Why? Because data belongs to everyone in your organization and if you can find a way to provide data democratization, and provide your business users with mobile BI tools, self-serve business intelligence, social BI tools and self-service data prep, your organization WILL reap the benefits.
Since it is the prerogative of a consultant to question and modify predominant jargon, I am hatting (yes, this too is an English word) …I am hatting myself in the hat of a consultant this morning, and I am questioning the application of the term “Business Intelligence.”
If your organization is implementing self-serve business intelligence, it is important to balance sophisticated tools with the skills of the average business user. While algorithms and advanced data analysis are a great benefit, if business users find these tools daunting, they won’t adopt them, and you won’t improve productivity, or timeliness or accuracy of decision-making.
Complex BI tools are not suitable for the self-serve environment. These tools are meant only for programmers and data scientists. To empower business users and allow them to achieve goals and contribute to the bottom line, you provide advanced analytics and smart data visualization tools in an easy-to-use environment that encourages user adoption and report and data sharing.
