Even if you do not work in IT, you have probably heard the term ‘Big Data’. These days, Big Data can cause big problems. If you do not have a plan to manage all that data and to make it easily accessible to your users, the data may as well not exist. If you cannot use that data for predictive analytics, you cannot accurately forecast your business results, plan for growth or compete in the market.
Isn’t it annoying to be out on the road on a business trip or at home trying to get some work done and discover that the tools you use in the office do not translate well to the device you have on the road? It is beyond me how software vendors can expect users to accept poor performance, difficult navigation and inappropriate quick fixes or workarounds that are designed to ‘make it work’ and result in user frustration, lost productivity and business delays.
Self-serve has many meanings. You can pump your own gas, you can serve yourself at a buffet, and sometimes you can even do your own data preparation. You will notice that I said ‘sometimes’. That is because you have to choose the right tool if you want to really participate in self-serve data preparation.
Augmented analytics, augmented data discovery, advanced data discovery…all of these terms can seem intimidating but they don’t have to be. In fact, it might be less intimidating to think of advanced analytics software as Smart Data Discovery. When you use that term, you acknowledge the most important factor in this process, namely that the software itself is ‘smart’ and that using advanced analytics tools is not a process that is limited to data analysts or data scientists.
